Rafael Azcona(Logroño, 1926)
Rafael Azcona is one of Spanish cinema’s most prestigious scriptwriters. He was born in Logroño in 1926 and moved to Madrid with the intention of becoming a cook or a bullfighter. In spite of these original goals, Azcona joined the staff of the La Codorniz humour magazine, with Mingote’s backing. Azcona, a caricaturist and novelist, made his debut in filmmaking in 1958 with Marco Ferreri with El pisito and continued to work with Ferreri in films such as El cochecito, The Conjugal Bed and The Ape Woman. He also worked with Carlos Saura (Cousin Angelica and !Ay, Carmela!), Luis García Berlanga (El verdugo and The Heifer), Fernando Trueba (The Age of Enlightenment, winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival and Belle epoque, winner of an Oscar for the best foreign film) and José Luis García Sánchez (La corte de faraón and Tramway to Malvarrosa). One of his most recent scripts was for Butterfly Tongues. In 1988, he received the Goya Award for the best script for El bosque animado and was awarded an Honorary Goya for his entire career in 1998. He is the author of several books including El Estrafalario and Vida del repelente niño Vicente, which recounts the adventures of a character he invented during his time at La Codorniz.
